When Universes Bleed by DJ Whipple and LA Whipple is a charming read with endearing characters. Amaya Atlas has always searched for the truth about her own origins and to understand what really happened to her parents. When she receives an important clue that could answer her questions, she makes the impulsive decision to leave the orphanage with help from her best friend. Amaya doesn't expect the turn her life takes when an assassin begins tracking her. While she searches for the truth, an army begins to grow at the hands of powerful forces that have returned with plans of destruction.
A clever opening line draws you directly into Amaya's unremarkable life and the remarkable story that soon unfolds. The beginning immediately sets the quirkiness within the story and the whimsy in the writing style. Lovely descriptions create a wholesome setting thanks to the Jove sisters who love everybody and their equanimity is the hallmark of how they ran the orphanage. Amaya is a great character who has a genuine goal to understand where she came from and to find her parents. Her determination to prove that they didn't just abandon her is what drives her on this adventure to find the truth. The other characters shine through the way that DJ Whipple and LA Whipple have crafted them and used them to balance the personality of Amaya.
Being an orphan is a primary theme within the story and is seen in a majority of the characters including Yunosho who is coping with the loss of his mother and struggling with being on his own now. Each of the characters has a quirkiness about them from Amaya to Elmo the assassin that is going through various obstacles in his search for her. A charming and quirky read, When Universes Bleed delivers fun and heart with eccentric characters, a delightful plot, and whimsical details.
