When Will Cicada Sing? is a wonderfully delightful book by Carla Mae Jansen. Carla is a science teacher and teaches children about the long life cycle of the cicada in this book. This little book is a fantastic introduction to zoology for children. Carla presents the facts about cicadas in a very entertaining manner that will keep children’s attention. The illustrations highlight the text and help explain what the nymph does underground for so many years. Along with the information about cicadas, Carla has included a hidden squirrel on the pages. This encourages the child to find the squirrel while also learning about animals. Introducing children to a bug’s life cycle at a young age can also help children not be so afraid of cicadas when the child is older.
Carla Mae Jansen has a love for science and for children. She is a mom who has earned an MA in Science Education. Carla combines her passion for science and children in When Will Cicada Sing? Carla’s delight in science is seen in how she explains scientific knowledge on a children’s level. This would make an excellent book for a parent to read to their child or, better yet, have their child read it to them. This will open the door for a frank conversation about the responsibility of all to protect the environment. Another principle that parents can teach through the words in this book is patience. It takes years and years for the nymph to mature into an adult cicada. Similarly, children can learn that they will also grow up one day, but it takes time.
