Whine and Dine by Marc Jedel is the second book in the Redwoods Country Mystery series. All Andy wants is a peaceful existence, but that doesn’t always come with operating a Bed and Breakfast. His typical day consists of dealing with endless small talk and the persistent problems of guests. But sometimes his day takes an atypical turn, such as stumbling upon a body. The discovery piques his interest, but he’s reluctant to involve himself in the case. But when his friend asks for his help, he is the only one willing to hear her out. This allows him to use his attention to detail to find mysterious clues and understand the motives that may have led to murder. But seeking the truth may put him in more trouble than he wanted.
The mystery is a delightful treat that blends murder and humor with plenty of surprises and clues. The cheeky humor works well to create the quirkiness of this small town and creates a charming setting ideal for murder, sleuthing, and hijinks. Marc Jedel’s quick dialogue and clever phrases make the tone lighthearted, and this is what makes the series so enjoyable. Andy is a loveable grouch whose curious nature and keen eye make investigating a murder upbeat. His personality drives the humor with little corrections or commentary that will make you laugh as you read. The relationship dynamics are the perfect recipe for misadventures, as each of the characters has a larger-than-life personality. The quirks of the characters also give levity to a murder mystery and move the investigation forward. Andy’s love of Agatha Christie is a delightful touch. Whine and Dine comes to life with Jedel’s humor, energetic characters, and charming writing.
