Murphy is off to school. He doesn’t understand why, and he wonders if it’s really just about learning new rules. In Becki A. Jacobson’s The Adventures of Murphy and Me: Why Must I Go to School?, Murphy continually questions the importance of going to school. He learns a lot of interesting things, but the most important lesson he learns is that it teaches him to repeatedly ask the question, Why? You may ask yourself why this is important. After all of your years of repeatedly asking why, annoyingly so, too, you have learned a lot of interesting things. So, keep asking why, just like Murphy.
Becki A. Jacobson’s picture book, Why Must I Go to School?, is an interesting addition to the Adventures of Murphy and Me book series. Told in rhyming verse, with a lyrical twist, this little gem is easy for young readers to follow along and improve their reading skills. As the plot develops, readers will also notice that, like they often do, Murphy asks a lot of why questions. This is an important learning tool and will help young readers adjust to the regularity of going to school and learning new things. The illustrations are bright, bold, and colorful, and add another dimension to the developing plot. At the end of the book, the author includes a list of words learned in the book, as well as some interactive questions to keep young readers asking those important questions. This book is a fun and informative read.
