Nicole Thomas’ intention is only to buy a book at the mall and go home without any incident. Unfortunately, a gruesome murder happens, and she is the main witness. Turns out, there are more identical deaths. She somehow feels responsible for the murder, as she couldn’t protect the victim with her power, and tries to investigate the deaths herself. She finds out that the victims were Fenerec/werewolves, and they weren’t murdered but died because of a disease.

RJ Blain continues the Witch & Wolf series with Book 2, Winter Wolf. Having read the first book, Inquisitor, I didn’t quite root for Nicole instantly as I did with the previous heroine. Nicole lost her voice as a bargain for power, and as a wizard she hides from the Inquisition. Nicole is hard on herself – I feel that there’s too much self-deprecation especially in the beginning chapters. Bravery comes along as the story progresses though, and it is a relief to see her gain more confidence and grit. Upon learning about the fatal disease, Nicole determines to save her estranged Fenerec family with her power.

Blain maintains her signature multifaceted storyline as well as elements of intrigue and suspense. The characters are well-fleshed out and the prose stays engaging as in Book 1. There are definitely some improvements on the plot’s direction and pace. Winter Wolf is another solid installment for the series. All in all, avid fans of the Witch & Wolf series won’t be disappointed.
