Elisse and her sister Lenore live in Wiston, where Elisse has been thinking a lot about her friend Drance, a soldier in the Agan army, who has gone off to battle to defend their people from the hostile armies of Forsene. During one of her strolls through the woods, she encounters a Genish native, Dimplin, who tells her she is the key to his village's salvation. Despite her doubts, Elisse joins forces with the diminutive man as they embark on a unique quest. Neither realizes it, but their fortuitous meeting will take them into enemy territory and pit them against a greedy wizard and an ambitious ruler with terrifying plans in J.L. Putney's Within the Crystal Mountain.

Faith meets fantasy in J.L. Putney's Within the Crystal Mountain. The world-building is impressively detailed, highlighting the different communities of Agan, Forsene, and Gen while illustrating what sets them apart, including the unique gods they worship and how their interactions with these deities shape their ways of life. The character development is straightforward, outlining basic relationships among the principal characters without extensively elaborating on their origin stories. The concept of TallOnes coexisting with the Gen will appeal to fantasy purists. At the same time, perceptive readers will notice the growing significance of the characters' dreams and visions as the narrative unfolds. What stands out most about Putney's unique storytelling technique is how he transforms various simple subplots into a fluid, captivating adventure through seemingly unconnected clues that prompt the reader to think outside the box. Fantasy and adventure fans will enjoy reading Within the Crystal Mountain.

In J. L. Putney's Within the Crystal Mountain, the protagonist, Dimplin, is a miniature Genish farmer who discovers a dome covering his village. His people are trapped inside this dome-like prison while he is on the outside, unable to cross the barrier. Bravely, he journeys to the southern lands searching for help and stumbles upon Elisse and her sister, Lenore, TallOnes from Agan. As a battle rages on between Agan and the inhabitants of Forsene, Dimplin must locate Grendfar, a wise elder who can guide him on his journey. Dimplin, Elisse, and Drance (a friend of the sisters) set out on a dangerous quest to uncover the mysteries behind the dome. The evil that plagues Dimplin's village is a threat to them all. Along the way, the group meets other acquaintances whose fates intertwine with theirs. Throughout every encounter, Evershone, the Gen deity, directs their path.

Within the Crystal Mountain is delightful and engaging Christian fiction that fantasy, adventure, and mystery lovers will wholeheartedly enjoy reading. I admire how J. L. Putney weaves an intricate plot involving various iconic characters and their distinct storylines, all of which are equally crucial to the entire story. Each character that Dimplin encounters on his journey possesses unique skill sets, which eventually prove beneficial to their quest in some way or another. It was beguiling watching them join forces to solve the challenges that presented themselves during their exhilarating venture. This novel is guaranteed to capture the hearts of The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter fans. If you are a teen or adult who enjoys reading YA fiction with resilient characters, magical lore, and witty moments, I recommend you add this novel to your bookshelf today.

Within the Crystal Mountain by J. L. Putney revolves around Dimplin, a humble Gen farmer from Arinton who busily tends his crops at dawn. Upon returning to his village, he discovers a dome structure blocking access to his home. Prevented from breaching the dome, Dimplin decides to trek to the southern territory, hoping to get assistance to solve his predicament. He is hospitably greeted by Agan folk — Elisse, Lenore, and their faithful companion, Drance. Simultaneously, an evil force surges throughout the lands. As two TallOne villages engage in war, a formidable wizard threatens the once-peaceful life of Dimplin and his new friends. Dimplin and his associates must venture on a challenging quest to discover the source of the dome and confront the dangers that await them. Will our heroes accomplish this arduous journey?

Within the Crystal Mountain by J. L. Putney is an enthralling and engaging work of fantasy. It explores how friendships can be shaped under the most strenuous circumstances and serves as a reminder that an omnipotent power oversees the lives of the innocent, even in times of uncertainty and despair. This exciting tale is told from various points of view, making the storyline immersive and dynamic. Each central character — Dimplin, Elisse, Drance, Tupin, Trestun, and Trofin — is relatable and compellingly coaxes readers into embracing their unique experiences. The author does an outstanding job of merging spiritual elements into the story in a way that accentuates the plot instead of minimizing it. Deities like Evershone and The Far One give readers a fascinating insight into the different religious beliefs of the Genish and Agan folk. Within the Crystal Mountain by J.L. Putney chronicles the interconnected journeys of several characters driven by a mystical crystal mountain and the consequences of a manipulative wizard's greed. The story begins in the peaceful village of Arinton, inhabited by the small, kind Genish people, which is suddenly enclosed in an impenetrable crystal dome. Dimplin, a Genish farmer caught outside the dome, is tasked by the elder Grendfar with finding a TallOne girl with golden hair in the southern lands who can help free his village. His quest leads him to Elisse and her sister Lenore in the town of Wiston. They are also dealing with the hardships of war after the Forsene, a hostile nation from the west, captured their parents. Follow these characters on a journey that poses many challenges and uncertainties. Does a simple farmer have what it takes to beat a greedy wizard, Sagins, and other magical forces?

The characters in Within the Crystal Mountain are diverse and well-developed. Dimplin is a gentle man who reflects the faithful nature of the Genish, driven by love for his family and trust in Evershone, their understanding of the creator. Elisse is a kind and resourceful young woman, exuding a sense of hope, while her sister Lenore struggles with hidden resentment. Drance is a principled soldier torn between duty and compassion, representing the possibility of goodness even in times of conflict. The young Genish Trofin and Tupin are driven by curiosity and a desire to help, and their youthful courage and humanity are beautifully captured in this tale. The prose is excellent, and J.L. Putney offers exciting and terrific descriptions, pulling readers into a world of fantasy that follows its own rules. I enjoyed the magic and adventure, and how the author captures details of the characters' lives. Their simplicity conceals hidden strengths that eventually are manifested as the story progresses. This novel is gorgeous for fantasy fans.
