Fresh out of Alberta, Texas, Madison is excited to get away from her small-town life and be on her own at university in New York. She counts herself lucky as she meets Ginger, a fellow freshman from Montana, with whom she instantly connects, becomes fast friends, and also roommates. It is the early 1960s, and the pair are the first in their families to attend college. While they are both on scholarships, they are determined not to let academic pressures stand in their way of experiencing campus life. However, they have no idea how many discoveries they are about to make and how much their lives are going to change as they enter the dating world and do jobs to stay afloat. Find out how it all goes down in Women’s Freedom: The Dawn of Possibilities by Barbara Becker Holstein.

Lovers of historical novels blended with drama and suspense will find Women’s Freedom by Barbara Becker Holstein an enthralling read. Weaving a nostalgic tale of youthful adventure and self-discovery, Holstein explores and exposes the conditions that female students faced in the mid-twentieth century, both domestically and socially. When it came to sex, everything seemed to be a gamble for Madison, from the unreliable contraceptive methods available to the men she slept with. She also had to deal with sexual harassment, societal expectations, lack of financial autonomy, and emotional turmoil, among many other challenges in her daily life. I understood her reluctance to go home during school break, and despite the social and historical setting of the story, her reasons, which include family dysfunction and judgment, are relevant in this era. Offering a window into the past, this story highlights the advancements made in women’s freedom and rights.
