Yasuke: Dead Man Walking by Braxton Cosby tells two connected stories set in 16th-century Japan and across the Indian Ocean. Oda Nobunaga starts as a young, carefree, and rebellious lord, jokingly called the “Fool of Owari.” Still, the death of a friend and family betrayals push him to grow into a smart, careful, and strong leader during the violent Sengoku period. At the same time, Majok, who later becomes Yasuke, is taken from his home in Sudan and sold into slavery. Majok’s journey carries him across India and then to Japan. He eventually takes on the role of soldier and bodyguard to a Jesuit missionary, Alessandro Valignano. He endures dangers, heartbreak, and the difficulties of living in a world that often treats him as different. Over time, his path begins to intersect with Nobunaga’s, moving toward a meeting with huge consequences.

In Yasuke: Dead Man Walking, Braxton Cosby merges history and adventure beautifully. Both Yasuke’s personal issues and Nobunaga’s political challenges are well-portrayed. The book blends major battles and emotional moments in a way that pulls the reader in. Cosby explains the time and places clearly, so you can follow what’s happening even when different storylines are being told. Nobunaga changes from a reckless youth into a determined leader, while Yasuke grows from a slave into a respected warrior. Themes of bravery and loyalty run through the narrative. I really enjoyed how personal stories and historical events are intertwined, making history feel alive. Anyone who likes historical adventures with strong characters and a mix of action and heart will enjoy this book. Very highly recommended.
