Intrinsic by W.H.B. is a literary saga that follows the fall and redemption of Christopher Franklin. We meet Chris in the middle of his shift as a New York City taxi driver, steering his 2004 Ford Crown Victoria through Lower Manhattan, but he is a man haunted by ghosts of his privileged past. The author uses nonlinear flashbacks to 1998 to show how Chris’s enviable life among the elite of Manhattan imploded after he met Mary, an enigmatic girl from New Jersey, and Josh, his friend from childhood. When Mary reveals she is pregnant, Chris is forced to choose between a pregnancy she can’t verify and his wealthy family. That is how he finds himself descending from Fifth Avenue luxury to the obscurity of the working class in Brooklyn. Years later, he discovers that his children, his marriage, and his identity were built on calculated lies. Read this book to discover what he does next.

W.H.B. writes in a stunning voice. I was hypnotized, literally, and couldn’t stop racing through the pages. There is an elegance in the prose that brings the world of New York to life. The writing is lyrical, and the dialogue kept me turning the pages. Intrinsic has the psychological depth I look for in books. The characters feel like ordinary people with ordinary problems, people you meet every day, but the extraordinary depiction of these characters makes them unforgettable. Chris is the tragic hero of the story, whose sense of decency is tested by Mary and Josh, and these characters are sculpted with frightening authenticity. Relationships are complex, especially between Chris and Sami. Sami challenges him in ways that elevate the story and force me to think about my relationships and people in my life as well. This story was classic!
