In 1000 Sci-Fi Writing Prompts: Story Starters and Writing Exercises for the Creative Author, Jan Power asserts that it’s one thing to want to be a writer, but it’s quite another thing to keep up with the writing regimen. Sometimes we feel drained when we’ve run out of ideas. That’s what’s called writer’s block. It doesn’t have to mean the end of your writing career. All you need is a little boost, and a few ideas to get the creative juices flowing again. If you’re into writing science fiction, you need some writing prompts related to that genre, such as “A soldier is cloned to build up the army’s infantry numbers. But when he returns home, one of the clones is already living with his wife.” That should ignite some creative ideas and let the imagination take flight.

Jan Power has written other books on the theme of story starters, exercises and writing prompts. Each book is focused on a specific genre or theme. Her latest, 1000 Sci-Fi Writing Prompts, focuses on science fiction. Imagine your very own writing coach living in your home, ready to kick-start your daily writing routine. The book is divided into ten thematic chapters and is full of fascinating, fun, exciting, and inspiring ideas to spark the imagination. Most of the prompts are story starters, but there are some endings as well, plus some suggestions to write a story using specific words, like the invitation to write a story using the words “trust,” “species” and “tavern brawl.” Some of the ideas are either funny or at least point to the potential for a funny story. Others are serious, adventurist, or full of possibilities to write an outer space story full of conspiracy theories. There is no right way to use this book as it’s one of those guides that will always be there when you need it most, like a best friend.
