Fisher is an ordinary nineteen-year-old . . . except he lives on a large spaceship, the G.S. Archean. Andrea and William Vaughan's 2nd Gen tells the story of the ship’s second generation, young adults whose parents fled Earth’s pollution-ravaged environment decades ago. Entering adulthood is hard enough, but it’s even more difficult on a spaceship, where the first generation chooses your job and even your spouse. The second gen has always known they’ll spend decades traveling to Uelara, a planet where humans can get a fresh start. In the meantime, they’ll marry and have children of their own. But as Fisher and the rest of the second gen prepare to assume their parents’ responsibilities, they realize the first gen hasn’t told them the whole story about their long journey. Heartbreak, conflict, and power struggles ensue.
In 2nd Gen, Andrea and William Vaughan have created a compelling, near-future world, made richer by fascinating sci-fi technology. I enjoyed the characters’ journeys as they encountered challenges. Though the ship’s population is small, they deal with many of the same issues of politics and authority that any nation or organization encounters. Fisher is a likeable main character, and as a reader, I rooted for him and the rest of the second gen. Not every character finds a happy ending, but the book presents a hopeful view of humanity’s ability to overcome difficulties. This novel tells a complete story, while leaving me invested enough in the characters’ futures that I’d be happy to read a sequel.
