Author Biography

Anthony Hains was born and raised in Port Chester, New York. He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees in psychology from the University of Notre Dame. He is currently a professor of counseling psychology. He is married with one daughter and lives in Wisconsin.

When he and his wife became empty nesters, he found himself with something called “time.” He started pursuing a long-time dream of writing horror fiction. While he still has his day job teaching courses on counseling children and adolescents and cognitive behavior therapy and conducting research on cognitive and behavioral factors related to adherence problems in teenagers with type 1 diabetes, he manages to fit in some fiction writing during off hours. The result has been sheer enjoyment and a few short stories and novellas which he hopes will see the light of day.

Dead Works is a horror novel written by Anthony Hains. Eric is a doctoral student in psychology and, as part of his training, he counsels students and people from the community at the University's mental health clinic. He's shaken by the story of his newest patient, Greg, who was brought to the clinic by his mother. Greg has seen ghosts, or he thinks he has, three of them, in fact. He's seen them only when he's visiting his father who lives with his girlfriend. Greg enjoys visiting them and working at their health food store, but the visitations have him a bit creeped out. Eric wonders what the odds are of having had two haunted clients, as the preceding year he had counseled Will, a student who had also reported seeing ghosts.

Anthony Hains' horror novel Dead Works is a psychological thriller that has me completely floored. I love ghost stories and Gothic horror, but this book takes it to a whole different level. I tried to stay up last night to keep on reading it and fell asleep holding my iPad. I actually started dreaming about the story. This morning I settled in to finish it and was blown away. Dead Works is intelligent, well-plotted and beautifully written. The characters are believable, and I quickly became involved in their stories. I'm actually quite amazed at the impact that this relatively short novel has had on me. Dead Works is a prodigious work of horror fiction, and I'm quite excited about the fact that this author has at least one other book to look forward to reading. If you read one horror book this year, make it Dead Works; you won't regret it.
