Lauren Parker takes readers on an intoxicating odyssey with this mesmerizing collection of poems. Inspired by David Bowie's album Station to Station, where the main character, The Thin White Duke, was a charismatic tyrant, Parker has penned captivating poetic narratives that follow the Duke's lesbian daughter on her way to New Mexico in search of her father's last known whereabouts. The narrator navigates many challenges along this journey, including the hot and arid landscapes of the desert, a broken car, addiction issues, complicated feelings toward the Duke, etc. The poems in Dark Way Down fuel the rebellious spirit that resides in us and show how the quest itself is sometimes more rewarding than the destination.

If Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was written as a poetry adventure book from a queer perspective, it probably would be something like Dark Way Down. The sheer energy, passion, and life radiating from Lauren Parker's verses are refreshing and feed your very soul. It's unlike most of the poetry collections I've read, and I was honestly pleasantly surprised. Parker has a unique poetic flair and voice that makes the poems feel more like rock songs than contemporary poetry. The storytelling is immersive and thoroughly engaging. David Bowie was a musical and cultural icon. I think this collection is the perfect poetic tribute to the legend. It's dark, emotionally resonant, and exhilarating to read. Poetry readers and David Bowie fans are going to love this book. I certainly did, and I highly recommend it!
