It is one hundred years into the future and, after a second civil war and global warming have devastated the United States, a newer, better society has risen from the ashes: The Union. Everything runs seamlessly, pollution is at an all time low and everyone lives by the belief that all human lives have equal value. This is the privileged society that seventeen-year-old Evan Taylor has grown up in and, like most high school graduates, she feels overwhelmed by the challenges now facing her. She doesn't feel cut out for any of the job assignments available – heck, she doesn't even feel cut out to be a part of her own family! All she knows is that she wants to make a real difference. Well, after she’s kidnapped and taken to a place that she didn't even know existed, she might just get the chance to do that. Then again, she might also end up falling in love - or dying! Who knows what the future holds? T.H. Hernandez's transcendent look into a futuristic world in The Union was inspired!
I found Hernandez’s first-person narrative in The Union to be a captivating read. The lead female character is strong – but not perfect. She’s just an ordinary teen facing regular issues. Indeed, accidents and mishaps seem to follow her around like a bad stench, but the red-haired vixen has the strength of character to challenge them fiercely. Moreover, she meets some engaging love interests and compelling characters in the process. The carefully painted futuristic world is possibly one of the book's best features, while the cliff-hanger ending leaves the reader wanting to know what’s going to happen next! Definitely give it a read if you enjoy a good coming-of-age adventure story.
