In Ava and Maya the Fairy Dragon by Medha Bhaskar, Ava loves to be outdoors and let her imagination run away with her. The forests are full of secrets and wonderful creatures in Ava’s mind. But one day, her exploration into the forest leads to a fantastic discovery: Maya, the rainbow-winged fairy dragon. Maya helps keep Ava safe as she explores the forest, and when Ava gets lost one day, it’s Maya who guides her home. Ava wants so much to tell everyone about Maya, but she can’t, for if she does, Maya’s magic will no longer work. As their friendship deepens, Maya teaches Ava much and helps her build long-lasting memories.
Ava and Maya the Fairy Dragon by Medha Bhaskar is a wonderful book packed with lovely illustrations that help give the story life. This is more than just a story, though. It also teaches kids that friendship can come from the places you least expect. It’s also about learning to trust and have the courage to step outside your comfort zone. Medha has created some lovely characters; a little girl that many kids will be able to relate to and a magical friend that everyone wishes they had. It’s also written in language kids will find easy to understand and follow. This is the perfect book to help kids set their imaginations free and teach them that anything is possible if they are open-minded enough and let go just a little bit. The Foreword says that the author is just 6 years old, and if that’s the case, then hats off to Medha – she is clearly very talented and has a great writing future ahead of her.
