What does kindness really look like? The Book of Kindness by Egor Klopenko is a collection of short poetic tales that explore that very question. Instead of having one main character from beginning to end, the book has different children, families, animals, and even elements of nature, each of which reflects on kindness in its own way. In one story, a family treats kindness almost like a member of their household. Another asks who might be the kindest being in the world. There’s also a shining star, magical birds called Kindwings, and other figures that encourage empathy and understanding. Together, they all highlight the many ways kindness can appear in everyday life. Maybe one will inspire you.

I think The Book of Kindness by Egor Klopenko is such a beautiful collection of stories. Each one is easy to understand, but still leaves readers with plenty to think about. Since stars are magical to me, my favorite tale is the one with the star. I liked how its message was that even a small light can help others find their way. As a teacher, I would enjoy sharing this book at the beginning of the school year. Before reading, I would ask students what kindness means to them. Each one is short, so I could easily read one a day. Then I could ask “What is kindness?” again to see how their thinking has grown. I would also extend the lesson by having students draw what kindness looks like to them and combine their work into a class book. The illustrations by Ksenia Panteleeva are soft, calming, and full of warmth. It was difficult to choose a favorite, but I especially loved the picture of the boy dreaming. Anyone looking for a children’s book about kindness, empathy, or positivity will want to pick this one up. The Book of Kindness belongs in homes, classrooms, and libraries. As the stories gently remind us all, kindness is free, so sprinkle it everywhere.
