Pick Me! A Shelter Story is a children’s story book written by Bobbie Asad and illustrated by Laurie Allen. There was once a little puppy living in the shelter with the other dogs. They were all waiting for someone to come and take them home. The puppy’s cage had a sign saying that she was a collie, but she was really a Belgian Malinois. One day, a lovely lady with a big hat came in to meet her. The puppy showed off all the tricks and skills she had learned, and she danced and jumped to impress the lady. Then she barked to ask the lady to pick her. When they met in the get-acquainted room, the lady was perfect. She laughed and held the puppy, and then she took her home. At home, the puppy got to meet her new sister, an adult German Shepherd. When they visited the vet, he told the lady that Truman was not a collie, but a Belgian Malinois. Life was even better than Truman could have dreamed now that she had a family.
Bobbie Asad’s children’s story book, Pick Me! A Shelter Story, is a heartwarming tale told through the eyes of a young dog waiting to be adopted. Laurie Allen’s illustrations do a grand job of bringing the story and Truman to life. I especially appreciated the expression on Truman’s face as she meets her new mommy and ventures out into the world. While the theme is poignant and highlights the hopes and dreams of countless shelter dogs waiting for their chance at a home and family, Pick Me! A Shelter Story is an upbeat and inspiring tale. Asad’s story is simply and eloquently written, and is perfect for read-along sessions as well as for new readers. Pick Me! A Shelter Story is most highly recommended.
