Mr. Cannelloni's Circus by Tuula Pere is an adventure story aimed at children ages 7 and up. It’s a chapter book with colorful, detailed pictures and circus adventures. The Cannelloni circus has been in the business for a hundred years, started by Mr. Cannelloni's great-grandfather. It boasts many of the exciting attractions these institutions are known for, although these days a real circus is a rare treat because many have disappeared from our world. This book details various characters and their roles in the circus, highlighting what a circus is and what it takes to maintain one. However, the circus is in trouble. Mr. Cannelloni is running out of money, the crowds are thinning, and the constant maintenance required to keep the show going may be more trouble than it is worth. So what to do?

I found this tale engaging, fun, and realistic. Sometimes I wondered if this story might be taken from real events—that’s how it seemed. I was swept up in the characters, rooting for them all the way, hoping that everything would turn out well in the end. Once I started reading, I was hooked, and could not put the book down. One of the most fascinating aspects of this book is how it provides realistic details about a circus that a reader can connect with, envision, and appreciate. It also brings the characters up close so we can identify with every one of them. I imagine children all over the world will love this book. In short, Mr. Cannelloni's Circus by Tuula Pere is a highly recommended read.

In Mr. Cannelloni's Circus, a children's book by Tuula Pere, Mr. Cannelloni sees the decline in attendance as his circus suffers financial ruin. In danger of bankruptcy, the end of his beloved family business makes him anxious. Most of the circus employees are as close as family members, and even though they could get other jobs, they are happiest when performing together. After his wife, Rosita, finds the cash box nearly empty, she confronts him, and they make a plan to resurrect the circus. An inspector threatens to unravel the arrangements, but Rosita changes her plan to suit his presence and strengthens her resolve to move forward with Operation Hannibal. But the circus may have more to worry about than the inspector, and an act of betrayal threatens the success of everyone's efforts.

What child hasn't dreamed of joining a circus? Tuula Pere, the author and illustrator of this delightful book, gives readers a colorful glimpse into the lives of circus performers. Just as a child's good qualities should be celebrated, Pere uses the performers' unique talents to solve problems. Pere describes Rosita as a strong female character who extends her unwavering support to the employees in her husband's business. Rosita would be a powerful example to children as they encounter setbacks. Just as it seems all is lost, Pere seamlessly winds a solution into the story. The chapters are a great length for children who are beginning to read chapter books, and readers who enjoy strong plots with endearing characters and lovely pictures will love Mr. Cannelloni's Circus.

Running a circus was no easy feat, especially when the circus in question was over a hundred years old and required much maintenance. Repairing the tents, installing the latest security measures, buying feed and accessories for the animals, paying the performers - the list never ended. Mr. Cannelloni dreaded the inevitable day of bankruptcy yet could not bring himself to divulge the news to his beloved wife, Madame Rosita. But what happens when Rosita finally finds out just how broke they are? Can she manage to raise the funds needed to keep the circus going? More importantly, can she convince the inspector that the circus is in good shape? Find out in Mr. Cannelloni’s Circus, a young adult book written and illustrated by Tuula Pere.

I loved the ensemble cast with their diverse nationalities and quirky traits. Tuula Pere’s colorful illustrations did an outstanding job of bringing the characters to life. The storyline engrossed me so much that, along with the performers, I also waited with bated breath for the inspection results. I admired Madame Rosita for her quick wit and practical mindset. Her ingenious plans and go-getter attitude taught us to face hardships head-on instead of fretting and avoiding the issue. The book also reminded us of the power of unity, as each member rose to the challenge and did their utmost to keep the circus afloat. The mystery at the end managed to put an engaging twist on the storyline. Mr. Cannelloni’s Circus was packed with entertainment and adventure, proving to be a perfect YA read.
