What do you do when everything everyone has ever said about your relationship turns out to be true? That’s the question Shelly must ask herself after her husband Cal betrays her, in the most clichéd of ways, after a Vegas bachelor party. With six years invested in her marriage, Shelly had to decide if she would run away and end her marriage or if his mistake was a forgivable one. Unable to get past his betrayal, she wants out, but Cal isn’t ready to call it quits so he asks for 2 two months trial period, which sets up for 8 Weeks of him trying to convince her they belong together. Bethany Lopez walked a very tight line with this story, making Cal sympathetic without actually absolving him of what he’d done. He is a great guy who made a terrible mistake and that comes through because he doesn’t really make excuses for what happened but he’s clear in his love for Shelly.
I’m really impressed with how Bethany Lopez set up 8 Weeks. We get to hear from both Cal and Shelly in alternating chapters so it doesn’t matter how much each character embellishes what really happened because between both sides of the story we get as close to the truth as possible. The story really shines for me in two places: their friends and the 8 dates. Their friends are individually supportive but hoping for reconciliation, not mention hilarious, brash and fun. It is on the dates where this love story is really told. Cal and Shelly have tons of history and while it is clear that they both still care for one another, the suspense lies in whether or not she can forgive him. Days later and this emotional tale still had me asking what I’d do if I were in Shelly’s place. That’s the mark of a truly good story.
