Max Overton's novel, A Cry of Shadows, is a dark and gripping thriller that explores not only the boundaries of life and death, but also the extents to which man will go in order to find answers. When scientist Ian Delaney loses his university job due to some questionable practices, he decides to move to America and put all of his energy into furthering his studies on what happens to the human life force after death. Meanwhile, there is a serial killer on the loose who is targeting young girls in the area. When these two very different, but very dangerous, men cross paths, it sparks a partnership that leads to an extensive investigation by the police and keeps readers on the edge of their seats, just waiting to turn the page.

A Cry of Shadows is the kind of novel that draws the reader in right away. It starts with a bang and retains that same energy the entire way through. Max Overton manages to weave seamlessly between the perspectives of Ian Delaney, the serial killer, and the lead detective on the case. The complexity of the characters is something not often seen in this genre, but only adds to the reading experience. Although the style of writing seemed a little redundant or overly detailed at times, the plot stays on track, growing more and more intricate as it progresses. For those who like their thrillers a bit more on the graphic side, this novel definitely delivers. The natural and supernatural are subtly combined in a way that reads less like a ghost story and more like a plausible scientific discovery, regardless of any prior beliefs. This novel takes a refreshing spin away from the typical scientist and serial killer mantra and delivers something new and exciting.
