Bethany Maines creates a cat-and-mouse chase in A Deeper Blue: 3 Colors Trilogy Book 2. Azure is waiting on a train station platform. She has the gift of Second Sight, an ability to see the future, which she cannot control. She knows she should wait for her train to Oregon to attend a summit and make amends to her sister. Instead, Azure gets an unclear vision and goes to a bar across the street from the station. While sitting at the bar, Rafe comes in and yells at the bartender. Azure yanks Rafe down when an eight-ball comes flying through the air. Rafe looks around and sees that the bar is full of Warlocks. Getting a water bottle from the bartender, the pair flees from the Warlocks. Azure agrees to ride on Rafe’s motorcycle as he offers to take her to Oregon. As they attempt to avoid their pursuers, Rafe and Azure learn more about each other and engage in several steamy moments.

Some of the most interesting fantasy characters I have ever encountered are Fae. Azure is a human and Fae cross but keeps that from Rafe. Bigotry is a prevalent factor, and I understood why she wasn’t forthcoming in the beginning. Rafe and Azure are opposites in their lifestyles. I felt that Azure’s detailed planning is extreme, and Rafe’s impulsive antics could be detrimental. Bethany Maines portrayed the two characters as being sexually compatible but built tension between them with social bias barriers. Azure was a naturalist, while Rafe preferred convenience. Their interactions with supporting characters allow a slow build-up to an important climax. The intense pace of the story captured my attention, and every moment was easy to envision right up to the cliffhanger ending. Readers who enjoy steamy fantasy stories mixed with magic-wielding characters with distinct personalities will enjoy A Deeper Blue.
