A Delicious Dinosaur Pizza Counting Party by R. M. Smith opens with Jake the dinosaur deciding to throw a pizza party, and all his dinosaur friends are invited. As guests arrive with their favorite toppings, the simple cheese pie becomes a loaded creation. Some choices are familiar, such as pepperoni and onions, while others are unexpected, like pickles, and it grows with each addition. This turns the idea of “come over for pizza” into a playful number countdown from one to ten. By the time the oven door closes, there are ten different ingredients on one very full pizza, plus a plain cheese one waiting beside it. Will the group of pals try their bold masterpiece, or will they stick with what they already know they will enjoy?
I really enjoyed how A Delicious Dinosaur Pizza Counting Party by R. M. Smith blends pizza, dinosaurs, and counting into a lively read-aloud. As an educator, I especially appreciate how each creature has both a friendly human name, like Jake or Jen, and its proper dinosaur name, displayed with its pronunciation, which will help readers of all ages. The growing list of toppings invites kids to think about what they like (or don’t like) on pizza while naturally encouraging them to try new ones. I also love how the number 10 is reinforced in multiple ways—through the ten ingredients and the ten-minute oven timer—so children see it in different contexts. In the classroom, I can see this book leading to a charting activity about students’ favorite toppings, or even to a class “pizza day” where kids help choose and maybe try one new topping together. The illustrations by the author are bright and full of character, with each dinosaur’s body language and facial expression adding extra personality. Those searching for a picture book that mixes food, math, and a touch of silliness will really enjoy this engaging read. I had a lot of fun reading it and can see it becoming a repeat request at home or in the classroom.
