Genies do exist, and wishes do come true in A Gift of Jacinth by Allie McCormack. Jacinth Khayyam is a Wish Bearer, a genie who chooses to be bound to a human to help them by granting three wishes. Douglas McCandliss is a hard-working veterinarian, struggling to keep it together two years after his ex-wife kidnapped their children. Skeptical at first, he accepts Jacinth’s magical powers when he is reunited with the kids through her intervention. That’s just the beginning of an adventure in which Douglas and the kids meet Jacinth’s friends and relations, a shape-shifting cat, and other magical beings. But their growing romance sparks a question: when an immortal and a human fall in love, how will their story end?
A Gift of Jacinth: Wishes & Dreams Book 2 is a marvelously entertaining read, with a cast of lovable characters. I had a hard time deciding which one was my favorite, but I think the cat won. The empathy and love of animals that dominate the feelings of the main characters is one of the most endearing things about the book. The world and mythology of genies, or more correctly jinns, is well researched and sympathetically told. Allie McCormack has the storyteller’s knack of keeping you glued to the book, neglecting other tasks. And she doesn’t shy away from the difficult questions about love and loss, and whether it was all worth it. The book is part of a series, but can be read as a stand-alone as well. I’m off to find the next one in the series! Highly recommended.
