A Hidden Puzzle by Margie Vieira is a suspenseful story of a young girl exploring herself, her gift of clairvoyance, and coming to grips with the unfortunate situations in her life. Mary Standford is eighteen, unsure of herself and unable to fully build up her confidence, but a sudden discovery will change her world completely. She knows she is clairvoyant. Now the reader is taken on an unusual journey as she explores trust with her father, tries to understand her mother’s terminal illness, and amidst all her struggles, there is a boyfriend who might not be who he claims to be. When the whole truth is unveiled, will Mary still find herself standing and will she have enough courage to embrace her gifts?
Told in an arresting first person narrative voice, this novel features very compelling characters, a great setting, and an interesting plot. The story begins with early memories and plunges the reader into the tradition and life of the Standfords. The setting is painted with colors and beautiful images. For instance, as the story begins, the protagonist is looking at the “peach blush of a dusk sky”. I loved the author’s skillful integration of pleasant scenes into the beautiful settings. The characters are well-explored and I enjoyed the emotional depth of the story. The conversations that punctuate the prose are well crafted and they read naturally. A Hidden Puzzle has a great plot and the pacing is good. It starts slowly, but the momentum builds up as the story progresses. Margie Vieira’s novel is an engaging, suspenseful story with great characters.
