JK Battaglia’s A Hope of Life features great characters, a great plot and powerful themes, including end-times, political intrigue, and a woman’s struggle to reconnect with the only thing that could give purpose to her life. Ashton Deveraux Forte has suffered so much in a very short time. First her husband is taken and killed by the Guillotine. Then she gives birth in very harsh conditions, alone with her dog. And in a quick moment, the only thing she wouldn’t part with is taken away. Who is behind this? Can she retrieve the only thing that links her to life? Join her in a search across cities and countries. Join her as she puts her life in extreme danger, facing the ruthlessness of the Protectorate. Can she find what she is looking for? Can she become whole again after so much hurt and betrayal?
There is a nauseating feeling that arrests the reader from the very first page of this book, the feeling that something wrong could happen any time, and it is this feeling that keeps the reader leaping from page to page. The narrative style is unique and the prose is excellent. A Hope of Life is character-driven, a story with a powerful setting. I enjoyed the way the author handles the political intrigue, the pacing, and the psychological depth of the conflict. One can’t read this story without feeling the tension rubbing off on them and the conflict will inspire all kinds of strong emotions in the reader. JK Battaglia creates memorable characters and a plot that is fast-paced; overall, it is intense and absorbing.
