A Memory of Fictions (or) Just Tiddy-Boom is a work of fiction penned by author Leonce Gaiter in the LGBTQ+, historical, and interpersonal drama subgenres. It is best suited to mature readers owing to the presence of strong language, sex, and domestic violence. Readers are invited into a gripping tale that intricately weaves together memoir, poetry, imagery, and diaries to depict the journey of Jessie Vincent Grandier, a gay black man navigating the complexities of identity and societal expectations in 1950s America. Born to a mixed-race family with contrasting backgrounds, Jessie grapples with the burden of familial expectations while navigating the tumultuous landscape of the 1960s and 1970s. From the death of his mother to his experiences at Harvard and beyond, the novel delves into themes of race, sexuality, and the quest for redemption amidst personal turmoil.

Author Leonce Gaiter utilizes a lot of creativity and research to craft a novel that challenges perceptions and provokes deep introspection about LGBTQ+ life now and in the recent past. I was impressed by the atmospheric storytelling and innovative narrative techniques, which created a rich tapestry of emotions and experiences that draw you into the action as if you’re witnessing it firsthand where it happened. From the ribald humor to the raw honesty and tender moments, the novel offers a multifaceted exploration of identity, family, and societal pressures with elegant use of dialogue and intimate narrative moments of true vulnerability and pain. Gaiter's portrayal of Jessie's internal struggles is well-timed and builds naturally without the need for exaggeration or melodrama, highlighting the universal themes of dislocation, disappointment, and the quest for redemption in subtle but meaningful ways. Overall, A Memory of Fictions (or) Just Tiddy-Boom is a thought-provoking and powerful work that offers a unique perspective on race, sexuality, and the human experience, and I would certainly recommend it.
