Sanctum is the first entry in the Dragon Guild series by P.T.L. Perrin, an immersive adventure for fans of YA fantasy. Gabriella “Gabri” O’Connell is a young Cherokee girl blessed (or burdened) with the extraordinary ability to manipulate sound frequencies. At just fifteen, she struggles with ominous visions of a dark force that has haunted her dreams. Everything changes for her when her nightmare becomes a reality. She awakens as a captive of the shadow in a dark tower on a different planet. A rider and a mighty dragon rescue her and take her to Sanctum. To cope, Gabri befriends a dragonet named Makani, who becomes key to her survival and the fight against the darkness that threatens her family back on Earth. With the aid of her caring mentors and allies, Gabri faces physical trials and an intense external battle against the shadow entity, Ozul, whom she must confront to save her loved ones.
The characters in Sanctum are intriguingly, fully drawn and believable, from the fiercely protective Gabri to the enigmatic Elio, whose past intersects with Gabri's destiny. Each character has distinct abilities that reflect their cultural backgrounds and personal histories. The author deftly explores themes of loyalty, family, magic, friendship, and personal growth. World-building is a standout element in this gripping tale, and the author cleverly weaves elements of Cherokee mythology with spectacular features of fantasy to evoke a perilous landscape filled with dragons, shadowy creatures, and magic. The balance between Gabri's mundane reality and the nuances of the fantasy realm of Sanctum creates compelling tension that drives the plot forward. P.T.L. Perrin has crafted a winning tale in this first installment, a story that will delight fans of Eragon. I enjoyed the rich setting, the well-developed characters, and the exceptional writing.
