Twenty-four-year-old Maeva had no idea how it had happened. All she knew was that one night she had gone to bed on Earth as a human, only to awaken as an elf with magical powers on Saerda, a perilous medieval world teeming with dwarves, elves, and sorcerers. Were it not for Garrol Tradson, a dwarven crime lord, employing her as his spy, Maeva would never have lasted a day, let alone the many months she had stayed, on the deadly streets of Saerda’s city-state of Westwatch. Her magic is her best shot at ever leaving Saerda. But first, she has to learn how to use it. However, trouble looms on the city’s horizon with the advent of the Caldacs, a faction of exiled dwarves who are against both the church and traditional magic. What are the Caldacs up to in the city? Find out in Zachary Watson’s The Garrison’s Duelist: Warblades of Saerda Book 1.

Once this page-turner draws you in, it latches on and is relentless, only loosening its grip after the final word. Zachary Watson’s The Garrison’s Duelist is the perfect pick for lovers of grimdark fantasy novels blended with action, adventure, drama, humor, suspense, and more. Weaving an intriguing plot, Watson whisked me away from reality, dropping me into the middle of a world of endless, magnificent imagination. The first-person perspective, witty introspective commentary, and evocative depictions made reading this book feel like watching a contemporary Hollywood dark fantasy movie. I got swept up in a whirlwind of slavers, goons, alchemists, sorcerers, zealots, mercenaries, crime lords, spiritual realms, and conspiracies, among others. The sentiment in the narration allowed me to experience the characters’ emotions. Juxtaposing their complex traits made it easy to connect with them. This is an incredible start to the Warblade of Saerda series. I loved it. I’ll be on the lookout for the next installments.
