What if everything you believed about your life turned out to be untrue? In A Reunion in Plotlands by Dawn Knox, the main character, Evelyn, grapples with that very question. This historical romance opens in wartime London, when wounded naval Lieutenant Jacob Adam appears at Evelyn’s door to thank her for the socks she knitted for him and the poem she tucked inside. What begins as a simple act of kindness becomes a moment that changes both of their lives forever. Evelyn’s home life is burdened with taking care of a mother who doesn’t care about her. After Mrs. Quinn ruins her moment with Jacob, Evelyn makes the difficult decision to move to Essex with her estranged sister, Ada, whom she hardly knows. There, she learns of a long-buried family secret and unexpectedly crosses paths with Jacob again, unaware that he still quietly carries a torch for her. Evelyn and Jacob’s journey blends themes of love, loyalty, social stigma, and healing, as they face both personal struggles and societal pressures, ultimately searching for hope and a future together.
Dawn Knox has woven an intricate tale of love, forgiveness, and family secrets in A Reunion in Plotlands. I truly appreciated the small details about WWII that brought the period to life and taught me more about everyday life for people who lived through it. I found Evelyn and Jacob to be quite endearing, and I was rooting for them from the very beginning. I also found the supporting characters interesting, especially Jacob’s landlord, who conspires with Ada to make sure the lovebirds get a second chance. Just when I thought I understood everything that was happening in the story, the rug was pulled out from under my feet with a reveal that completely reshapes the plot. It’s the kind of story that keeps you invested in the romance, draws you into the characters’ lives, and leaves you feeling like you’ve truly walked alongside them through every joy and heartache.
