A Sanguinary Rose by E. L. Luengo follows Scarlett Rosenbaum, a high school student who lives in Farpoint, Washington. After a terrible night at a party, she is attacked while walking home and wakes up as a vampire. As she tries to manage new urges and physical limitations, Scarlett learns that her town is home to a secret supernatural world that most locals don’t even know about. With help from her new friends—Oliver, Anya, and a warlock teacher named Mr. Royce—Scarlett tries to survive school, hide her condition from her family, and understand the strict rules enforced by a secret organization. Meanwhile, bullying at school worsens, and dangerous figures from the vampire world begin to close in. Can she protect the people she cares about while holding on to who she once was?
A Sanguinary Rose by E. L. Luengo blends young adult horror, fantasy, and high school drama to create a fascinating story about identity and power. Luengo writes in a way that pulls you in, even when the supernatural features become unsettling. The story has action, but also slows down to let Scarlett grow from someone who just reacts to her situation into a person who starts making real choices. Bullying and abuse are handled carefully, along with themes of guilt and survival. These keep the tension in the story without making it confusing or too dark. The vampire and supernatural elements are also used to explore self-discovery and teenage feelings, which makes the book more engaging. Anyone who loves young adult vampire books or coming-of-age stories will enjoy reading this.
