Carrie Rubin’s The Missing Au Pair is set in 1985 Paris, when Kelly Burke arrives in the city of lights to start her new job as an au pair for Camille and Philippe Garron, right in the heart of the posh sixteenth arrondissement. From her cramped sixth-floor servants’ room, she finds out that the previous au pair, Erin Fenton, disappeared under circumstances nobody can explain. When Kelly discovers a cryptic note and a dark stain hidden in her room, she begins asking questions that lead beyond the Garron apartment and into unfamiliar corners of the city. With the cautious support of fellow American Wayne Larson and the ever-so reluctant guidance of Dion Fontaine, Kelly follows a path that descends beneath Paris and into a maze of hidden secrets. As her search deepens, Kelly confronts secrets that suggest Erin’s fate is tied to forces operating out of sight, leaving her to decide how far she is willing to go for answers.
Carrie Rubin’s The Missing Au Pair is a brilliant crime novel that revolves around the question of what happened to Erin Fenton, the previous au pair in the Garron household. It's no wonder that Kelly, the new au pair, wants to know, especially fresh on the heels of her own loss back in Minnesota. Rubin offers an intelligent and thoughtful mystery, with plenty of twists and what might be one of the most shocking endings I have come across in ages. She executes this through multiple point of view characters, ranging from Kelly to Wayne, the recruiter, and even a maid. It is all so well done. Plus—it's Paris! Yes, there's a person who appears to be in grave danger, but there's also wine and stone apartments near the Bois de Boulogne, and limestone passages under the city with chalk markings. Wait, what? It's all fun and games until you're ankle-deep in stagnant water. Readers who enjoy crime fiction in historical settings will appreciate how well Rubin situates danger within recognizable Parisian spaces. I loved every step of it. Very highly recommended.
