A Sibling's Guide to Big Feelings, written by Katie McDonough and illustrated by Sophie Garcia, is a picture book for young readers that teaches important lessons. Evy Thomas is a young girl who takes on the responsibility of teaching her baby sister, Remi, how to handle difficult emotions. In a fun-loving way, she recounts how she handled big feelings when growing up, notably anger, sadness, worry, frustration, and jealousy. Their brother is also part of the lessons: Evy explains that he doesn't like sharing his toys and tells Remi that she should ask before playing with them. She tells Remi that the rules are there for their safety. On one occasion, she remembers and explains that when Mom leaves the house, it is all right to worry, but that Mom will be back, and only leaves the house out of necessity.

A Sibling's Guide to Big Feelings reads like a nursery rhyme, but without the rhyming ever feeling forced. I appreciated the liveliness of the writing, and the illustrations do a brilliant job of accentuating this. Whilst being fun and high-spirited, the book delivers important, strong, and valuable lessons to young children, and the balance between entertaining and seriousness is perfect. Katie McDonough's writing shows insight into teaching and comes across as empathetic toward younger readers. I enjoyed that the book includes a wider audience, as young Evy and toddler Remi can both learn from it. On both counts of writing and animation, A Sibling's Guide to Big Feelings ticks all the boxes for a very good children's book.
