Sean M. Price's Signs of the Fall is set in Salem, Virginia, where a young man leaving the abandoned Water’s Church late at night sets off a catalyst for everything that follows. After witnessing a strange light descending above a dark rural road, he chooses to keep the experience to himself. From here, a string of unsettling events begins surfacing in the region. Deep in Foxhill Forest, a man goes missing, and a discovery in an old well reveals that whatever haunts the woods is not restrained by time. Storms dredge up PTSD, while sexual deviancy and harassment rampage through workspaces and private lives. Friction rises inside a local church, and these paths all seem to quietly come together, criss-crossing a landmark with a telling inscription in Triangle Park. “Do not judge someone by the nature of their fall.”
Sean M. Price’s Signs of the Fall is a creative and unique story, not just for its content, but in the way the story is told. Peter is the strongest central figure, and he does not have an easy time as his faith is tested. I admit that I did not really like Peter that much, but I did care what happened to him, which is a real testament to Price's skill as a writer. The character I found most fascinating is Sister Rose, an older church member who has a supremely keen eye for what is happening around her. She's the type of woman who will step in between an argument, but isn't afraid to recommend calling the police when the law is broken. Price leans heavily into the book of Genesis and temptation in Eden, moving toward 1 Corinthians and the removal of the corrupt from our midst. One begins the fall, while the other attempts to contain it. The author is a master of the metaphor, eclipsed only by an absolute shock of an ending. Readers who like supernatural fiction and eerie, small-town unease will love this book. Very highly recommended.
