A Snow White Christmas by Gary Charwin begins when the Queen of Grimm wipes out Christmas across the kingdom, draining color, stopping snowfall, and ordering everyone to abandon any sign of joy. Snow White pushes back, insisting the season can’t simply vanish, and sets out to find someone who can help undo what the Queen has done. While Snow White searches for allies, the Queen grows alarmed and sends a huntsman to eliminate her, which triggers encounters with forest creatures, a house occupied by seven toy-making elves, and the Queen’s plan to use trickery to reach Snow White first. As Snow White gathers support to restore what was stolen, the Queen uses magic, threats, and disguise to tighten her hold in a battle over Christmas returning or disappearing under the Queen’s control.
What does one get when a well-known tale gets a Christmas-style shake-up? A Snow White Christmas: "Let Life Begin Again!" Gary Charwin offers a holiday tale that pulls together the ultimate battle of dark intent and the lightness of hope for readers who love a good mix of shadowy cheer. Charwin leans into the classic menace of the Queen and Snow White's spirited determination, but shifting from dwarves to a collective of elves. The writing style has a musicality to it, and moments that bring brightness to scenes of real danger. Noël Kinney's illustrations make the prose visual, in a full color sketch style that's reminiscent of childhood color pencil artwork. Overall, this is a festive read that gives Christmas and the seasonal spirit a fresh and unique facelift.
