Let's meet Mac, the Macadamia nut who was a special nut. His friends Doodle and McNutt agreed that he was a special kind of nut and interesting too. Mac felt hot when it was cold and he slept on the floor at night though he had a comfortable bed. Most of his food fell to his feet when he ate and his tongue stuck out when he sat down to take down notes. Though his friends Doodle and McNutt knew he was different, they knew he was always there whenever they needed him. Once Mac helped a kid in the neighborhood build a lemonade stand and he helped his neighbor install a ceiling fan. He even helped an old lady safely cross the road.

A Tough Nut To Crack by Erik VanTuyl is an adorable story about being different, kindness, and friendship. The author's illustrations bring the characters and story alive for young readers and help them understand Mac's kindness and soft heart. Though Mac is tough on the outside, he is a friend who is always there to help. It is a wonderful storybook for bedtime storytelling and tutors can use it for read-aloud and storytelling sessions in classrooms and school libraries to encourage children to be kind and helpful to others and become less judgmental. A Tough Nut To Crack by Erik VanTuyl is also a good way to help children realize that everyone is different and it is the inside of a person that counts more than their exterior.
