When the kidnapping of the President’s daughter by Russian mobsters puts police officer Justin Thyme’s face on the news, he becomes a target for a clandestine group known as IVY. They want him as an asset because the kidnapping is actually part of something much bigger. Grieving the death of his friend and mentor, who died in the line of duty, Justin joins IVY and embarks on a mission of revenge. But before he can find the police chief’s killers, he must build trust with his new partner. IVY assets work in pairs, and first impressions suggest his partner wants him dead. A Wolf Beneath the Sun by Nick Johnson is fast-paced and action-packed as Justin and Chiyoko battle drug lords and human traffickers to free victims and deliver justice.

Nick Johnson has taken a fascinating premise and thrown together the most unlikely characters in the world of IVY. Chiyoko is ruthless and entirely at ease with the cold-blooded side of her nature, while Justin fears the brutality that lurks beneath his calm exterior. The novel’s prevailing theme is balance, and I loved how Johnson made even the smallest details bend toward that idea. Every force on the scale is met with an opposing weight—Chiyoko is softened by Justin, even as she makes him more resolute. The other characters swing through extremes, with exciting plot twists that kept me turning the pages to the very end. A Wolf Beneath the Sun is a high-stakes, tension-filled story and a promising first novel in a new series.
