A Yankee Spy in Victorian London, Book 2 is from the Victorian Spy Series by Patricia Catacalos. Cody Carrington, an American, travels to England to clear her great-uncle Frederick, accused of treachery. In order to accomplish this feat, she reluctantly agrees to assist the Crown by enacting the role of an enraged, outspoken relative seeking justice. Cody is to report to an enigmatic secret agent, Raven, while pretending she’s the Earl of Huntingdon’s mistress to catch the real double agent. Her convincing performance gets the attention of a few persons who could be the alleged suspect, but it arouses jealousy in Lady Essington, who flirts with Jonas. As she performs her part, Cody becomes attracted to Raven and Jonas, especially the latter with whom she is often seen.
Playing the spy game in the 1860s is not entirely different from modern times as I observed some similarities while reading A Yankee Spy in Victorian London. The historical mystery is suspenseful with a few clever twists that made the story more captivating. This is Patricia Catacalos’ second book in the Victorian Spy Series. Her characters have strong personalities, and Cody possesses a sharp tongue when provoked. The story has a catchy beginning and there are a few scenes that are very touching. The dialogue is not stiff as expected for the period, but sometimes flirtatious and amusing, depending on the occasion. A Yankee Spy in Victorian London, Book 2 from the Victorian Spy Series makes an enjoyable read. Patricia Catacalos' book is recommended.
