Someone once said, “Start each day with a grateful heart,” and in Abigail and the Waterfall: Loving God's Good Earth by Sandra L. Richter, a young girl named Abigail is thankful for the monthly nature hikes she takes with her family. When she hikes in the woods with her parents and brother on the first Saturday of every month, she finds wonder in everything that surrounds her, from the towering trees to the fluttering butterflies. She also learns how everything is connected and to be respectful of God’s good earth. Readers join her on this adventure, making small discoveries along the way. By the end, she discovers something vast and beautiful—and perhaps even a new friend.

What struck me most about Abigail and the Waterfall is how it captures the quiet joy of family traditions and the wonder of nature through Abigail’s eyes, and highlights how much she treasures those trips. As an educator, I think the gentle, conversational storytelling by Sandra L. Richter makes her curious observations very relatable to children. It encourages them to look more closely at the world around them. It also emphasizes the importance of keeping the earth clean—not just for people, but for the animals who depend on it. Students will be eager to talk about their own nature discoveries and the new vocabulary sprinkled throughout the story. Michael Corsini’s artwork is a true highlight. His illustrations burst with vibrant greenery and expressive faces that are sure to keep kids engaged. This tale will inspire families to create their own outdoor traditions and foster a lifelong love of the earth.
