Above the Darkness by Sarah Morrisette is a fascinating read. I am not usually attracted to books with fantastical content, but this book has an endearing character by the name of Elizabeth. Elizabeth Murphy is a child, but a child with adult discrimination. While her parents and siblings at home wreak havoc in her young life, with their wrong signals, verbal and sexual abuse, Elizabeth is privy to mentors of another dimension. Through the advice given to her by these other entities, she is gifted with the ability to right wrongs while learning the power of right choices. When one of her sisters dies, she is led on a journey of revelation. Good and evil are exposed in visual and tactile ways and she discovers, sometimes to her horror, that her dysfunctional family hides more than one secret. On her journey of awareness, Elizabeth becomes conscious of her own strengths and weaknesses, as she relentlessly pursues the truth. Trusting one of her brothers with all that she has uncovered, she hopes he will understand and support her as she campaigns to find a way to vindicate her sister, while seeking to expose whatever criminal activity might has occurred – at home or away.

I found the book intriguing. Elizabeth’s purity of heart and mind grows in leaps and bounds as she follows her spiritual mentors. She not only learns the truth of life around her; she also discovers peace. Let your mind wander and question everything as you delve into the story. Elizabeth’s temperament is a balm amid all the craziness and brutality happening around her.
