You can have a good team and the perfect action plan, but leading in the right direction is what enables you to achieve your goals. Both at work and in life, it’s not just about learning strategies, but about putting ideas into practice and showing empathy and support. Brent Witthuhn's Adventures in Leadership teaches us how to be effective leaders. He compares leadership to being out in nature, among forests and mountains. For example, admitting that you’ve strayed off course is the quickest way to get back on track, whether at work or on a walk. Preparing in advance for an excursion is also similar to working in an office with an action plan. But he also offers an honest perspective when he explains that a leader doesn’t always win, and that you have to know how to face difficulties with a positive attitude.
I really liked how Brent Witthuhn organizes his ideas. He writes in a clear and relaxed way, like a friend sharing his life experiences with you. He divides each chapter into two parts. First, he describes an experience with nature. His stories are entertaining and fun because he shares adventures in the forest, such as camping, hiking, or climbing mountains. In the second part, he explains how to apply those experiences to leadership. I also liked that he often encourages the reader to take responsibility for their actions and to help others. For example, never leaving a companion behind, whether on a long journey where you have to support the most tired person, or at work, where collaboration can benefit the whole team. Adventures in Leadership shows us that experiences, both good and bad, are what help us grow.
