Fans of Alice in Wonderland will love this book! Mimicking Lewis Carroll’s style down to the last detail, Lenny de Rooy gives us another chance to go on a crazy adventure with Alice. The story starts with Alice falling into a lake. She soon discovers that her biggest problem isn’t finding a way out of the lake but stopping the Queen Bee from sinking Alice’s rowing boat. Alice’s Adventures under Water takes the reader from one fantastical scene to another in classic Carroll style. Along the way prepare to meet a fish washing its brain, characters who never give a straight answer, talking fish, a meerkat, and many more imaginative individuals. Look out for subtle and not-so-subtle references to pop culture that make this book a little more accessible to the modern audience.

I loved Alice’s Adventures under Water because it was like stepping back into the magical mind of Alice. Lenny de Rooy’s attention to detail is impressive and makes the experience more authentic. It takes courage to attempt a sequel to a popular book but de Rooy’s work could have come from Carroll himself. The poetry is strategically placed and whimsical, scenes are outrageous and fabulous, and the writing is perfectly balanced. I loved sharing Alice’s frustration with characters who never gave straight answers. Part of the fun is questioning the logic behind everyday ideas and this book is full of that. This book is as perfect for bedtime stories as it is for curling up with a cup of tea after a long day at work.
