Amber Ambrosia is a work of fiction in the fantasy, adventure, and suspense subgenres, and it forms the second novel in the MiddleGate series. It is intended for middle-grade and younger YA readers and was penned by author Rae St. Clair Bridgman and narrated by Larissa Thompson for this audiobook version. Continuing the narrative after The Serpent’s Spell, readers are given the shocking news that escaped prisoner Rufus Crookshank is on the loose, threatening Wil Wychwood and the ancient medallion he possesses. The secret society of the Serpent’s Chain is determined to control the medallion and its magic. A mysterious new symbol, a tiny golden bee, appears on the pendant, raising questions. Simultaneously, MiddleGate’s honeybees are dying, sparking rumors of magyk involvement.
Author Rae St. Clair Bridgman has crafted a fantastic sequel that more than lives up to the quality of the first installment. I think the work is perfectly paced for the target age group to offer a great blend of suspense and some new magical elements, building on the previous world to deepen and expand our understanding, as well as amping up the danger for the central cast. I found the bonds of friendship really endearing between the characters and Wil’s continued development into a highly capable and endearing young hero creates a compelling narrative that keeps the reader hooked until the very end.
Listening to the story provided an even more immersive experience, with Larissa Thompson's narration breathing life into a wide variety of characters and filling the enchanting world around them with wonder. The audiobook captures the essence of the mysterious narrative. The editing was crisp and clear, with some great additional sound cues for atmospheric touches to set the mood well. Overall, I would certainly recommend Amber Ambrosia for MG and YA readers as an engaging and delightful experience for fans of well-penned, exciting magical adventures.
