Amy and her family are off on a beach vacation for an entire week. And her two best friends, Lilly and Dawn, and their families have been invited, too. In Nirja S. Khemka’s Amy’s Sandy Summer, Amy learns that sometimes besties can be a challenge. The bond between the girls is strong, but is it strong enough to endure some unexpected intrusions? There’s lots of sunshine and fun at the beach, but there are also some twists and turns that will have the threesome wondering about their friendship and what’s going on around them. The language is suitable for the target age group, and it flows along easily, which is a bonus in helping early readers improve their reading skills while they enjoy the developing plot.
Nirja S. Khemka’s chapter book, Amy’s Sandy Summer, is a friendship story that will appeal to middle graders. The dialogue is used effectively to develop the characters, set the scenes, and move the story forward. Line drawings by Elijah Ball and the author are scattered throughout to help add another dimension to the plot development. There are some delightful, lighthearted scenes where friendship blossoms, while other scenes build tension as the threesome works to intensify their loyalty to each other. The main theme is friendship and the power behind it, as a good friendship like these girls have is worth fighting for. The author adds some mystery to the plot, which challenges the friendship, while also bringing the girls closer together. I loved the bonding and friendship theme throughout the story. Well done!
