In An Oath of Marrow, William P. Blake III intricately constructs a dark and chilling world where ancient magic, sorcery, mythical creatures, and shape-shifters collide with the precision of DNA and fingerprint analysis. Clute Myrtar remembers every detail of his last case as if it happened yesterday, a case so bizarre, so unreal, that it changed the course of his life forever. Clute arrives at the scene to find the victims savaged by brutal wounds; however, the remaining clues do not fit any logical pattern. As Clute feverishly races to find the killer, he faces open hostility at work and receives cryptic messages and clues from the past. An encounter with a traveling seer leads to a warning of a hidden connection between Clute and the killer. Soon, the investigation spirals into a struggle between reality and illusion. And in broad daylight, who will believe Clute, even as he grapples with what he has just witnessed? Who will stand by him? And how can he prevent it from happening again?
In An Oath of Marrow, William P. Blake reflects on death and its certainty. Clute has experienced and seen death so often that it no longer shocks, frightens, or deeply moves him. As he contemplates the murder case, he finds peace with the inevitability of death. This reveals a man who is rational yet empathetic, someone who accepts life’s harshest truths yet still strives to bring closure to the living. Blake is a master of contrasts, with jaded and seasoned detectives pitted against the wide-eyed rookie, and Clute’s squalid living conditions standing in stark contrast to his relentless professionalism and sharp investigative mind. These opposing forces highlight the story's tension and realism, mirroring the chaos within the case. I immensely enjoyed the burst of humor in the detectives’ banter, which perfectly offsets the story’s dark theme. Ultimately, Clute Myrtar’s story is a heartwarming testament to the idea that heroes still exist, even if they are bruised, imperfect, and haunted. Fans of brooding and complex heroes fighting external and internal battles, as well as fans of fiction with a supernatural twist, will undoubtedly enjoy An Oath of Marrow.
