An Unexpected Adventure by Kandi J. Wyatt is the first book in the Myth Coast Adventure series. Harley lives in a quaint town at a bed and breakfast run by his parents. His life takes an extraordinary turn when Harley and his friends are inspired by a professor to go searching for thunder eggs. He never expected to find anything. The three boys discover a mysterious egg that Harley feels an instant need to protect. When the egg hatches, he and his friends are shocked when a dragon emerges. With the help of his friends, Harley takes on the responsibility of keeping the small creature safe but hiding a dragon isn’t easy as she continues to grow, learns to breathe fire, and let’s not get started on what feeding she requires. Protecting her seems more than he can handle, but he’s determined to do whatever it takes.
The story is fast-paced as events occur quickly after Harley and his friends find an egg that hatches a dragon. Kandi J. Wyatt has fun with the concept by bringing the epic feeling of a quest and dragons into a real setting. The adventure unfolds close to home and revolves around the escapades they are involved in to keep Steria (the dragon) safe and secret. Steria injects some excitement into Harley’s life as he feels an immediate sense of protectiveness toward her. Their bond is sweet and grows steadily stronger. The plot is reminiscent of ET in Harley’s attempts to keep Steria hidden from the government and the heartwarming journey of doing what’s best for her. Harley’s friends, Chace and Will, form their connections with Steria in the concern they have for her safety and the protectiveness they share.
The story is a lighthearted journey, and the bond with Steria is reminiscent of a relationship with a beloved pet (though with a magical component) and has an emotional core. Wyatt incorporates a lot of heart into these dynamics which will make it easy to form attachments and makes for a fun beginning to the series. The quaintness of the town is the perfect setting to hide a dragon as it’s described as a place where livestock and cranberries outnumber the people. Sketches are included that depict various images of Steria and add small visuals as the journey progresses. A great story for young readers as it has friendship, a fast-paced plot, and a dragon. An Unexpected Adventure is a delightful tale of friendship told through an epic journey that all begins with the discovery of an egg.
