In Anam Cara: Your Soul Friend and Bridge to Enlightenment and Creativity, Dr. Glenville Ashby explains that a person’s soul is an inner resource that, when tapped, will allow an individual to live up to his or her full potential. The persona, the face we present to others, is not our true self. Ego, fear, and pride block our self-awareness. Anam Cara, defined in Celtic belief as a “soul friend,” is a person who accepts you as you are. This book explains an Anam Cara’s role, the benefits of having a soul friend, and what it will require of you. The relationship between a person and their Anam Cara is mutual. A significant portion of the book details practices which will prepare a person to be ready to work with an Anam Cara.
The narrator, Stephanie Murphy, has an expressive and soothing voice, which I found to be hypnotic. Although her narration was flawless, her relaxing tone made it more difficult for me to concentrate on the text. This book is written for people who are eager to examine the possibilities that life can hold for them. Dr. Ashby has studied extensively. He has a broad knowledge base in philosophy, world religion, and psychology. In addition, his experience as a journalist and speechwriter are evident in the quality and style of his writing. The text is enhanced by quotes from a wide range of sources. Although I found Anam Cara: Your Soul Friend and Bridge to Enlightenment and Creativity to be pedantic, it was also persuasive and instructive.
