Ananke: The Prologue by Natalie Raffaele is a graphic comic work of art in the science fiction realm. Here we have characters—not human, though they have human traits. These are AI robotic-types and their mission is to explore new worlds so that humans can escape their old and dying planet. Reminiscent of movies like 2001: A Space Odyssey, as well as other sci-fi movies made in the past, our heroes find something important, but things go wrong. Suddenly, everything turns sideways and the mission is jeopardized.

One of the reasons I enjoy and choose to review graphic comic books is the quality they bring to the table. Not all are on this level of quality, of course, which makes this book so much more enjoyable to read. The artwork is superb and easily comparable to any other commercial quality out there. The story is easy to follow, engaging, and interesting. It’s not unique, though that is hard to do since there are only so many situations one can create in space. But it doesn’t feel tired, or a retread of other stories. It feels fresh and new. And finally, the characters really shine. We don’t know them for long, but they capture the human-like traits of rebellion, sarcasm, and humor that make them endearing. This is another to-be-continued story, but this part is so well done that it makes sense to stop here. I am eager to read the next installment of this series. Ananke: The Prologue by Natalie Raffaele takes imagination, talent, and creative storytelling, and weaves it into an adventurous and truly enjoyable tale. Highly recommended!
