When Lindsey Hartwell, a reserved middle school art teacher, reluctantly boards a bus in the company of her best friend, Melanie ‘Mel’ Halston, bound for Shadow Lake Ranch, Montana, her only worry is that she has made the wrong decision to tag along. It was all Mel’s idea. An entire summer of horse riding, yoga, bonding, and lots of fun at a remote ranch. Things looked promising as the pair arrived at the ranch, bumping into Travis, a handsome farmhand who instantly falls for Lindsey, and with whom Lindsey is smitten. However, little does Lindsey know that her worries are well-founded. It turns out Mel secretly wants Travis for herself. And Lindsey may not know Mel that well. What Mel had promised to be the best summer of their lives quickly turns into Lindsey’s worst experience as Mel’s façade breaks down, her true self appears, and their retreat culminates in a murder. Find out how it all goes down in Nellie H. Steele’s Her Last Best Friend (Shadow Lake Ranch Murders Book 1).
If you are looking for a slow-burning mystery murder flavored with romantic drama, adventure, and more, Nellie H. Steele’s Her Last Best Friend is the right pick. Featuring a diverse, enthralling cast, Steele weaves a web of mystery around the plot, unfolding it through a multi-perspective timeline. The subtle tone of the storyline hooked me. I was left guessing what was coming next, and kept flipping through page after page. The exquisite descriptions and introspective voice accompanying the narration allowed me to experience the cast’s emotions. Juxtaposing their complex traits made it easy to connect with them. The story mirrors the real world, where sometimes the people we consider our closest friends are, in fact, our worst enemies. And those with the purest souls and intentions often end up being used and hurt. However, like Lindsey, this should not be a reason to be miserable and heartless to others. There is betrayal, deceit, jealousy, manipulation, love triangles, dark secrets, and more in this whodunnit.
