W.M. Gunn’s And The Walls Came Tumbling Down is an alternative history spanning the First World War and a transformed Second World War. At Mons in 1914, British soldiers witness a hand descend from the clouds during a German assault. Years later, identical twins Wolfgang and Manfred Kretz grow up in Warsaw under the guidance of their Jewish grandparents before entering Germany’s air force. Their opposing beliefs place them on different paths as Adolf Hitler expands his rule across Europe. In Texas, Allen Maxwell follows his father into military aviation and becomes part of the Allied planning after Germany changes the course of the war. Chapters set in ancient Canaan connect these events to the fall of Jericho, suggesting that the power seen at Mons has returned at a moment when the nations are preparing to remake the world.
W.M. Gunn makes the novel’s reimagined history persuasive by rooting its decisive break in wartime espionage, as paid IRA informants place the Normandy plans in Erwin Rommel’s hands and give his defensive expertise the means to secure a German victory. Gunn follows that reversal across the war, where the loss of a western foothold redirects the atomic program toward Berlin before Germany’s expanded reach produces a hidden V-10 site in Mexico. This political map remains grounded in character through Wolfgang, whose rescue of Ehud, a Jewish teenager attacked in Warsaw, establishes the moral conviction guiding his wartime choices. Gunn places that arc inside a convincing period setting, with concealed tank emplacements built into Normandy houses making Rommel’s preparations plausible. Intelligently written and expansive, readers who enjoy true alternative history military fiction will love this first book in Gunn's new trilogy.
