At the Ready is a work of fiction in the romance, suspense, and thriller subgenres, and it forms the third volume in the Global Security Unlimited series. It is intended for the general adult reading audience. Penned by author Sharon Michalove, this captivating romantic thriller combines corporate ambition, complicated love, and a dash of karaoke into a truly charming tale. The story follows the lives of Micki Press, a determined Chicago lawyer trying to rise within a conservative law firm, and JL Martin, the CEO of WatchDog Inc., a successful security company grappling with family complications. When Micki's ex-lover starts stalking her, JL steps in to protect her, igniting a passionate connection that goes beyond friendship.
Author Sharon Michalove tells an imaginative and romantic tale that brings together the complexities of corporate ambitions and personal relationships. The chemistry between Micki and JL is electric, and their journey from friends to lovers is both heartwarming and thrilling, with plenty of smooth dialogue and fun exchanges. But the work has more to it than just the well-paced romance, as it's also filled with fast-paced action and intriguing, suspenseful twists in the stalker plotline that kept me engaged throughout. The close narrative style was deeply engaging, with characters that are relatable and well-developed because you get to know them naturally through their speech and thought presentation rather than being spoon-fed information. If you're a fan of older-couple romances, friends-to-lovers tropes, and stories with a touch of danger, At the Ready is a highly recommended read.
